Taliban Supreme Leader Hibatullah Akhundzada congratulated Afghans Tuesday for "liberating their country from foreign rule" in his first statement since the group assumed power in Afghanistan last month.

"I assure all the countrymen that the figures will work hard towards upholding Islamic rules and sharia law in the country," said the supreme leader.

He clarified that Sharia Law would bring order into the country and organize Afghanistan's future. He also said that the government announced earlier yesterday, Tuesday, that it would start working as soon as possible.

"The movement is committed to all laws and international treaties that do not contradict Sharia Law," he explained.

The Taliban announced Tuesday that Mullah Mohammad Hassan would be acting Prime Minister for the new Afghan government, while Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar would be acting Deputy Prime Minister.

A Taliban spokesman also said Mullah Mohammad Yaqoob, son of Taliban founder Mullah Mohammad Omar, would be the new defense minister, and Sirajuddin Haqqani, son of Jalaluddin Haqqani, would be the new interior minister.
