MEP Thierry Mariani says Zelensky does not want peace and that the war in Ukraine is not his war

French Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Thierry Mariani has accused some EU partners of trying to indirectly weaken the economy, by further embroiling European countries in the Ukraine crisis.

"Some of our allies behind the ocean dream that this war will last 3 years because it will weaken Europe and then it will have to pay huge bills. This will be more dangerous than the epidemic," Mariani said during a BFM TV interview.

Mariani explains that "Within the European Union, there are also supporters of a more active participation in the crisis, such as Poland and the Baltic states," noting that "these countries are looking to settle some old scores after leaving the Soviet Union."

The MEP argued that "I don't feel like this is my war. Who can believe that France is in danger? In fact, we are joining the war on the side of a country that arouses sympathy through propaganda and playing with feelings, but we are not allied with it. I do not want my country to go to war. I repeat, it is not my war."

He stressed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky "does not want peace" and is trying "to drag Europe into an endless conflict."

Mariani further urged not to forget "the crimes of the Ukrainian side, which have been bombing civilian homes since 2014."

Significantly, the MEP noted during his interview that "Europe has been dragged into a dangerous spiral, and today we must ask ourselves: How do we achieve peace?"

In response to a question about the need to abandon intervention in the crisis and not help Ukraine, Mirani said: "France should have shown itself better in the diplomatic field," recalling that "the successful solution to the conflict in Georgia in 2008 was the mediation of French President Nicolas Sarkozy."

French right-wing leader Marine Le Pen considered on Sunday that the centrist government made a "geopolitical mistake" when it backed the European Union’s ill-conceived sanctions against Russia.

Le Pen, who finished second in this spring’s presidential race, indicated that the government was "swept along by the European Union crazed by the war in Ukraine into adopting inappropriate and thoughtless sanctions."

She said Germany, the main beneficiary of Gazprom’s Nord Stream gas pipelines and a vocal advocate of the green transition, was the one responsible for the EU’s dependence on Russian energy imports.

"If anyone is responsible for our dependence on Russia, it is the idiots and the naive who bet on wind and solar power," Le Pen told a party meeting in Agde in southern France.
