Michael Cohen, the former legal counsel for Donald Trump, speculated that Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump might be FBI informants working against the former President, a report by Newsweek revealed.

Ivanka, former President Trump's daughter, stated last week that she would support Donald Trump "outside of the political arena" but that she would no longer be participating in politics.

She is one of many prominent Republicans who have decided to abandon Trump's campaign in the wake of the GOP's disappointing midterm results, according to Newsweek, which saw them win just a narrow victory in the House of Representatives and fail to take control of the Senate.

Ivanka and Kushner may have been the informants who alerted the FBI that Trump was keeping classified documents at his Florida Mar-a-Lago residence, according to Cohen, who made the claim during an appearance on MSNBC's The Katie Phang Show on Saturday morning.

He offered his explanation as to why the couple will not be returning to the campaign, saying they already "got everything" they wanted from working in politics. He cited Trump's release of Kushner's father and the couple's earnings of more than $640 million while they served in the White House.

However, he added one other potential reason why they may not be returning to the Trump campaign.

"I believe Jared and Ivanka potentially were the moles in terms of the Mar-a-Lago documents and so on," he said. "And it would be very interesting to have, let's say, the son-in-law, the daughter who are FBI informants—DOJ informants—acting as senior members of a campaign or an administration if he should somehow manage to slide back in."

On August 8, FBI investigators searched Trump's Mar-a-Lago residence and allegedly found boxes with secret documents. The DOJ is currently looking into whether these materials were inappropriately stored at Mar-a-Lago. Trump maintained his innocence, saying he could declassify the documents "even by thinking about it."

The idea that Kushner and Ivanka may have collaborated with the FBI is not new, according to Cohen. According to Newsweek, in August, Mary Trump, the niece of the former President, hypothesized that they might have been the anonymous source that alerted the FBI.

"I think we need to look very hard at why Jared got $2 billion. We need to look very hard at why he has been so quiet for so many months now. And we need to think about who, if it, who could also be implicated in this that would need as big a play as turning Donald in, in order to get out of trouble, or at least to mitigate the trouble they're in," she said during an interview with The Dean Obeidallah Show.
