Lebanese President Michel Aoun signed a decree on Sunday accepting the resignation of the caretaker government headed by Najib Mikati, to announce the matter at the "appropriate time" before the end of his mandate on Monday, according to a source who spoke to Sputnik.

Aoun announced yesterday that neither Mikati nor his team have the will to form a government and said that Mikati meets the demands of all parties, currents, and parliamentary blocs, except for the demand of the Free Patriotic Movement, considering that it is not acceptable to place a guardianship over the movement or the Strong Lebanon bloc.

Lebanese President Michel Aoun will end his term tomorrow as President of the Republic after a period of 6 years without a candidate for the presidential position announced yet.

It is noteworthy that Lebanon is currently governed by a transitional government, with Prime Minister-designate Najib Mikati charged six months ago with forming a government.

The political vacuum threatens to deepen the country's crises in light of an accelerating economic collapse that started three years ago and a caretaker government with limited powers, with the failure of political forces to form a government since May.

Since the early hours of the morning, supporters of the Free Patriotic Movement, founded by Aoun, have flocked to the vicinity of the palace in the Baabda area overlooking Beirut.

The Lebanese parliament has so far been unable to agree on a successor to Aoun, who has the power to sign bills, appoint new prime ministers, and give the green light to government formations before parliament votes on them.
