Libya's House of Representatives confirmed that postponing the elections before their scheduled date is not within its jurisdictions.

Libya's parliament committee in charge of overseeing the country's first-ever presidential election scheduled for Friday has concluded that it will be impossible to hold the vote on time.

Al-Hadi Al-Saghir, the chairman of the committee, wrote Wednesday to the head of the Libyan parliament that "after consulting the technical, judicial, and security reports, we inform you of the impossibility of holding the elections on the date of December 24, 2021, provided for by the electoral law."

The High National Electoral Commission had not published a finalized list of candidates and analysts had suggested no side wanted to take responsibility for the election being canceled.

For its part, Libya's House of Representatives confirmed Sunday that postponing the date of the elections before their scheduled date on December 24 is not within its jurisdictions.

The House of Representatives noted that the Libyan Electoral Commission is in fact the responsible party for declaring the inability to carry out the elections.
