Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said, on Wednesday, that some countries are using the Ukraine crisis to impose unilateral sanctions against China alongside other countries.

During a meeting with his Indian counterpart, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar at the G20 summit in Bali, Wang said: "Some countries are using the Ukrainian crisis as an excuse to impose excessive unilateral sanctions against China and other states."

He went on to say that such steps "further worsen the Ukraine crisis."

Besides, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley met with his Chinese counterpart, Gen. Li Zuocheng, on Thursday, to tackle ways to improve crisis communications and reduce strategic risk as per the Pentagon.

"Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley spoke with People's Liberation Army of China Chief of the Joint Staff Department Gen. Li Zuocheng today by video teleconference," the Pentagon stated in a press release.

"Gen. Milley discussed the need to responsibly manage competition and maintain open lines of communication. Gen. Milley underscored the importance of the People's Liberation Army engaging in substantive dialogue on improving crisis communications and reducing strategic risk," it added.

Tensions between Beijing and Washington were at an all-time high under the Biden administration at the height of the trade war and in light of the US imposing sanctions on Chinese tech firms.

The tensions between the two sides are exacerbated by the crisis over Taiwan, with the US threatening to militarily intervene in the case of any "hostile" Chinese actions against Taiwan, not to mention the cyber and trade wars between the two major powers.
