Bermuda's first-ever gold medal winner, Flora Duffy

Bermuda became the smallest country in the history of the Olympics to win a gold medal after Flora Duffy came first in the Triathlon, beating Britain's Georgia Taylor-Brown and the United States' Katie Zaferes.

Duffy, who was in the lead for nearly the entire Triathlon, scored a time of 1 hour 55 minutes 36 seconds - more than a minute ahead of Brown and Zaferes.

Duffy is Bermuda's first gold and the country's second Olympic medal after Clarence Hill brought a bronze medal home at the 1976 Montreal summer Olympics in boxing, heavyweight division.

Bermuda is a 52.3km island in the North Atlantic Ocean, with a population of nearly 64,000.

After receiving the gold medal, Duffy said, "It was always my dream to be an Olympic champion [...] for me, I hope it inspires the youth in Bermuda, we're from a small country, but that doesn't mean we can't achieve great things on the world stage."

According to her father, Duffy's participation in the Triathlon was not certain at all, as she was injured and only recovered 4-5 weeks before the competition. He contends that her being at the starting line was a positive thing in itself.
